Biographical history

'Francis Romeril Maddison (27 July 1927 \x96 12 July 2006) was a historian and Arabist. Born in Hounslow, London, Maddison was educated at Hounslow College and, subsequently, at Exeter College, Oxford.', Maddison was a member of the British School of Rome expedition to Lepcis Magna in 1949. After this, he took a position as an assistant archivist at the Glamorgan County Record Office, followed by Warwickshire. Under the encouragement of C.J. Josten (Curator of the History of Science in Oxford, 1950 - 1964), Maddison accepted the post of assistant curator at the museum. Here, he developed his career, eventually becoming Curator in 1964.', In 1978, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and in 1983 he was elected to the International Academy of the History of Science.', He retired from his position as curator in 1994 and died in 2006.'
